Clare Pope

Biography

Clare is a partner in our Projects and Construction group.

She specialises in energy and resources M&A and project development, including renewable energy and energy transition.

Clare has 20 years’ experience advising clients on a range of energy and resources transactions, as well as major project development. Clare advises clients on sale and purchase agreements, farm-ins, joint ventures, Production Sharing Agreements, State Agreements, oil and gas and LNG supply agreements, royalty agreements, project development, power purchase agreements, commercial contracting, infrastructure access and sharing agreements and other resources and infrastructure related documentation.

Clare has particular expertise in relation to energy transition and has advised on the development of a number of renewable energy projects, carbon capture and storage projects, hydrogen projects including green and low carbon projects and ammonia projects, as well as projects that generate carbon credits such as ACCU and PURO credits. Clare also advised on the world’s first carbon neutral condensate cargo from Western Australia’s Pluto Project.

Clare has advised clients in relation to their activities globally, including in Australia, Africa, South East Asia, Latin America, the United Kingdom, Europe and former CIS states. Clare has worked in Perth, London, Tokyo, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Experience

Clare’s experience includes advising:

  • Province Resources on the proposed development of an 8GW green hydrogen project in Western Australia. 

  • Infinite Green Energy on the proposed development of green hydrogen projects in Western Australia, New Zealand and Italy.

  • POSCO on the pre-feasibility aspects of its Australian Green Steel Project and its hydrogen pilot project.

  • Mitsui E&P Australia on its proposed developments for its CCUS, green hydrogen and ammonia export project.

  • deepC Store Limited on its proposed listing,  the development of its CCS project and discussions with the government in relation to the London Maritime Protocol.

  • Elixir Petroleum on its proposed hydrogen projects in Mongolia.

  • Tokyo Gas and Kansai Electric Australia on the world’s first carbon-neutral condensate cargo from the Pluto Project in Western Australia.

  • A large Japanese utility on its investigations of the Australian carbon market CCUS.

  • Carnegie Clean Energy on the proposed corporate PPA arrangements for the Northam Solar Farm in Western Australia.

  • TransAlta Australia on the acquisition, and subsequent sale, of the Goonumbla Solar Farm to FRV and regarding the development of the 150MW South Hedland Power Station.

  • Tokyo Gas and Kansai Electric regarding Pluto Train 2, including investments, expansions and operational matters which include arrangements between Train 2 and Scarborough LNG and the interconnector pipelines.

  • Various mining companies regarding the development of renewable power – wind, solar, BESS and on remote mine sites as a diesel fuel displacement.
