Anna Smyth

Biography

Anna is a partner in our Technology and Intellectual Property group.

Over the last decade, Anna has been involved in some of the most high-profile, high-value and complex IP driven deals in the Australian market.

Her experience covers all stages of the product life cycle, including research and development, collaboration and strategic partnerships, intellectual property licensing, technology transfer, manufacturing and supply, distribution, sponsorship, and trade mark co-existence agreements.

Anna advises clients across a range of IP rich sectors, including healthcare and life sciences, renewable energy, consumer and retail, agribusiness and financial services.

Anna is dual qualified in Australian and English law and practised as a commercial IP lawyer in a Magic Circle law firm in London. Anna has also spent time in-house at a leading Australian pharmaceutical company and in the technology transfer office of a Go8 university.

Anna has a Bachelor of Law (Double First Class Hons) and a Masters of Law from the University of Cambridge, England.

Experience

Anna’s experience includes advising:

  • Emyria Ltd on an agreement with Aspen Australia for the licensing and commercialisation of EMD-RX5, an ultra-pure CBD capsule aimed at treating symptoms of anxiety and stress in patients with a chronic condition.

  • Tivan Ltd on a long-term partnership with CSIRO, including a complex patent licence agreement, to facilitate development and commercialisation of the TIVAN+ critical minerals processing technology.

  • Orthocell on a global exclusive IP licence and manufacturing agreement with BioHorizons Implant Systems Inc. about Striate+, a resorbable collagen membrane used for guided bone and guided tissue regeneration procedures.

  • UNSW on the important parts of its ongoing involvement with Diraq and Silicon Quantum Computing. These arrangements underpin UNSW’s commercialisation of its patent protected world leading quantum computing technology.

  • A G08 university on a project to upgrade its processes and precedents in respect of Research, Grants, Contracts and Commercialisation.

  • PIUS Limited LLC on the grant of $60 million in secured funding for Carbon Revolution, a leading global manufacturer of lightweight advanced technology carbon fibre wheels.

  • Xpansiv Limited on an agreement with The Regional Voluntary Carbon Market Company (RVCMC) to provide the technology infrastructure for RVCMC’s carbon credit exchange.

  • A wide range of corporate and private equity clients on the IP aspects of numerous high profile M&A transactions, including KKR’s $2.175bn purchase of Perpetual, and Guzman y Gomez’s IPO.

  • The Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation on a range of IP issues, including IP ownership structuring and overall brand strategy.

  • A leading player in the AgTech space on a suite of interlinked agreements to fund, develop and commercialise genetically modified seed technology.
